The Los Angeles Police Department has issued a notice on their website revealing exact locations of their warrantless checkpoints. Their News Release from 12/9 stated "The LAPD is giving fair warning to all partygoers. 'In addition to DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints, you will also see officers conducting an increased number of traffic stops during this highly visible enforcement period,' said Sergeant Karmody. 'If officers suspect anyone is driving while under the influence, officers will show zero tolerance for drunk or drugged driving.' Unfortunately, the excitement and celebrations of the holiday season can lead to terrible decisions and serious legal consequences. Data shows that the holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of drunk drivers on the roads, and the LAPD is prepared to stop and arrest any drunk driver they see to keep roads safe."

The LAPD 2013 Annual Report revealed that the department received $1.5 million taxpayer dollars to set up these checkpoints in 2013 alone: "In November 2013, the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, awarded the LAPD a grant for $1.5 million to fund a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on City roadways through special enforcement and public awareness efforts. The grant awarded to the LAPD would supplement the Departments ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and quality of life through enforcement and education. Specifically, the grant supports the following activities (NR December 3):

  • Specialized DUI and drugged-driving training such as Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement and Drug Recognition Evaluation
  • DUI Saturation Patrols
  • Motorcycle safety enforcement
  • Distracted driving enforcement
  • Speed, right of way and pedestrian traffic enforcement
  • Compilation of DUI "Hot Sheets" to identify the most egregious DUI offenders

The LAPD has seen more than its' share of corruption. In 2013 the L.A. City Council paid out $6 million dollars in a lawsuit to officers who sued the LAPD for "imposing a traffic ticket quota and punishing them when they objected." A similar judgment was issued in 2011, when an L.A. jury awarded $2 million dollars to two LAPD motorcycle cops who had sued their employer for demanding illegal ticket quotas. Despite losing over $8 million dollars in taxpayer funds due to his illegal traffic ticket quota revenue schemes, gun-grabber LAPD Chief Charlie Beck continued to defend his actions. Instead of apologizing and vowing to discontinue all quotas, Beck claimed "This was not a quota system under the law," alleging that the lawsuits were settled because it was "the most prudent business decision." "It is unfortunate that this case cost the city hard-earned taxpayers money," he added.

Last year, the LAPD told residents to "Get a dog, buy door locks & take a YMCA class, but ditch your guns." They urged residents to TURN IN YOUR GUNS" at the Masonic Temple in December 2013. In June of last year, I had a chance to actually go to one of these gun turn-in events and I conducted videotaped interviews with the police and public, who explained why they surrendered their guns for $100 grocery cards. It was surreal to put it mildly. The LAPD has another gun confiscation event today (12/13/14) at the Masonic Lodge. They seized 1,989 guns last year via their boyback program.

In October, LAPD officer Ryan Eric Galliher was arrested in Huntington Beach for committing lewd acts in public, in front of a 12 year old girl. Turns out he was a serial flasher with many victims; he's currently out on $100,000 bail and has a court date in January 2015.

The LAPD reported in their mandated bi-annual report that they made 72,574 arrests in the last half of 2013.

The LAPD is giving fair warning to all partygoers. In addition to DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints, you will also see officers conducting an increased number of traffic stops during this highly visible enforcement period, said Sergeant Karmody. If officers suspect anyone is driving while under the influence, officers will show zero tolerance for drunk or drugged driving.

Unfortunately, the excitement and celebrations of the holiday season can lead to terrible decisions and serious legal consequences. Data shows that the holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of drunk drivers on the roads, and the LAPD is prepared to stop and arrest any drunk driver they see to keep roads safe.

Drunk drivers often face jail time, the loss of their driver licenses, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing and repairs, to lost wages due to time off from work. Even worse, a drunk driver can cause a traffic crash that claims someones life, or their own.

Please follow these tips to keep the holidays safe and happy:
-Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving Drunk - or worse, the risk of having a crash while driving.
-If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.
-If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
-Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.
-If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someones life and inaction could cost a life.

Remember, it is never safe to drink and drive: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Funding for this Checkpoint provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that reminds everyone: Report Drunk Drivers! Call 911.
