The U.S. Military, on an obscure website, has released photos of Marines and Sailors from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) participating in the 'Realistic Urban Training' (RUT) in Los Angeles. These are the photos which the LAPD neglected to tweet over the weekend. Barging into apartments, handling detainees, and "enhancing their combat skills in environments similar to those they may find in future missions."

The LAPD tweeted a few benign photos of am aircraft landing for the Marine Urban Military Drill over the weekend at Fort Hunter Liggett, Ca. However, hidden in the archive of the DVIDS (Defense Video & Imagry Distribution System) are several more revealing photos which the LAPD did not tweet, of the drills which began in Los Angeles this weekend.

DVDIS on their website is described as "a state-of-the-art, 24/7 operation that provides a timely, accurate and reliable connection between the media around the world and the military serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. Through a network of portable Ku-band satellite transmitters located in-theater and a distribution hub in Atlanta, Georgia, DVIDS makes available real-time broadcast-quality video, still images and print products as well as immediate interview opportunities with service members, commanders and subject matter experts. The DVIDS mission is to serve as a turnkey operation that facilitates requests for Public Affairs video, audio, still imagery and print products; coordinates interviews with soldiers and commanders in a combat zone and provides an archive for ongoing operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain."

A 12/4 press release from DVIDS about the military drill in Los Angeles stated, in part:

"Marines and Sailors from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit will be training at several locations in downtown and metro Los Angeles from Dec. 5-16 to prepare the unit for its deployment to the Western Pacific and Middle East next spring. RUT (Realistic Urban Training) prepares the 15th MEU Marines for their upcoming deployment, enhancing their combat skills in environments similar to those they may find in future missions... For safety and security reasons, specific locations within Los Angeles will be withheld until after the training occurs. All aspects of this training have been coordinated with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Additionally, measures have been taken to reduce the amount of aircraft noise during the training, but nearby residents may hear the sound of helicopters or other aircraft... The Marines respectfully request that local citizens near the training venues keep a distance from the training for their own safety and that of the service members."

"Realistic urban training allows the Marines and sailors of the 15th MEU to exercise vital skills to better prepare them for what they may face while forward deployed," said Col. Vance L. Cryer, the 15th MEU's commanding officer. "Bringing together the entire Marine Air-Ground Task Force in an exercise such as this one allows us quality, realistic training that is essential for unit readiness." The MEU is composed of a command element and three major subordinate elements. They are Battalion Landing Team 3/1, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 (Reinforced) and Combat Logistics Battalion 15, the ground, aviation and logistics elements respectively."
