Remember Facebook's founder and CEO Owner
Mark Zuckerberg mocking his naive users and
calling them "dumb fucks" for "trusting" him? Now it's getting even better as a popular application which Facebook recently acquired allows the corporation a vast number of liberties via the users iphone.
WhatsApp was in the news on Saturday February 23 because the service went down for over five hours. At the very same time, there was a massive drug bust in Mexico, with an alleged drug kingpin being captured in a joint U.S./Mexico law enforcement operation. I am not certain that Facebook purposely turned off whatsApp to thwart the suspect's use of the app during the arrest, but the timing is certainly suspicious.
Nevertheless, I had installed WhatsApp [whatsapp.com] onto my phone some time back, before Facebook purchased it, and when the WhatsApp service was down Saturday, I went on my phone to look for more information about it to try and solve the problem.
That is when I came across the PERMISSIONS listed on the application index.
These are things that all users must agree to before installing the app on thir phone.
The number of things that WhatsApp/Facebook can do is astounding.
As if Facebook was not creepy enough already, now it can do the following things, including audio/video recording you, saving and even drectly calling all your contacts, modify/delete everything on your SD Card, have full internet access to your phone, accounts, and much more.
Here is the video I made discussing the matter and showing you the actual WhatsApp terms.
Is it really necessary for a messaging application to allow the company to record everything you do, snoop at, copy and call your contacts, and give them full authentication rights to your account? Of course not. SO that should raise the question: Why do they do it and what are they going to do with all your data?
Track you 24 hours a day, compile and sell all your data, probably provide it to whatever government agency asks for it, invade your privacy, and assault your dignity.
Delete and uninstall WhatsApp, the 2014 Big Brother Nitemare, Today.
This application can accessss the following on your phone:
Your personal information
read contact data, write contact data
Services that cost you money
directly call phone numbers, send SMS messages
coarse (network-based) location, fine GPS location
full internet access
act as an account authenticator, manage the accounts list, use the authentication credentials of an account
modify/delete SD card contents
record audio, take pictures and videos
read phone state and identity
charge WI-FI state, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping, retrieve running applications, write sync settings
Google Play billing service, receive data from Internet, view network state, view WI-FI state
automatically start at boot, install shortcuts, read sync settings, read sync statistics, uninstall shortcuts
discover known accounts, read Google service configuration
UPDATE: 9:47PM Pacific 2/23/14: Several hours after I published this article, Forbes.com posted a silly piece titled
5 Uncool Things That Facebook Could Do To WhatsApp. First on the list was
"1. Detailed registration – collecting user information," falsely implying to their readers that WhatsApp 'could' theoretically collect detailed information about their users but has not done so yet. This is complete garbage propaganda and very unsophisticated for Forbes to supposedly 'not know' all the things that WhatsApp already admits collecting and surveilling in their own terms of service.
Forbes writes "Since its inception, all that you need for signing up to WhatsApp is your mobile phone number. Simple. You’re almost anonymous."
As you saw above, that is far from the truth.
