I've been to beaches all over the United States, from west to east coasts: My favorites in California are Newport Beach, Santa Monica, Big Sur; to the East Coast, Delaware, to Mexico: Acapulco, Cancun, and Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico. The photo to the left is one I took at Key West on Monday.
But I have never, ever seen or felt "sand" like what I found in Key West, Florida, on Monday. It was my first time in the Florida Keys and once we arrived, the first thing my wife and I noticed was that there was NOT A SINGLE PERSON IN THE WATER.
This to us was quite bizarre as we'd never seen or heard of a beach on a beautiful day with no one in the water. I asked some ladies who were sitting nearby if there was a reason for that. She said the water's ok, but not too clean.
I went in first, and it felt like thick, very odd, gooey glue-like quicksand. It was so mucky, glue-like and odd that I got my phone and tried, without dropping my phone, to film some of this stuff without touching it with my hands. Your feet felt like they were stuck and you couldn't move, especially if you stood in one place very long.
When my wife joined me in the water, the first thing she said when her feet went into this stuff was "eeew it's like glue!! what is it?!" She got out quick and didn't go back in. That's perhaps why she still has ten toes, and I don't. (Just kidding,... so far at least.)
But seriously, what is this stuff? (Sorry about the poor audio quality, It was very windy.) The video probably does not properly convey the Gooey-glue-like grossness of this blob sand-stuff.
Here are some pictures of the FrankenSand, and the gooey-blob that remained when it plopped it back into the 'water.' The photo on the left looks like the blob has a tail on it. The next day we stopped by the famous tourist spot, the 'Southernmost Point in the Continental U.S.', 90 miles from Cuba.
UPDATE: A poster from the DailyPaul.com posted this insightful comment regarding this story:
That's the gel globs from the dispersant used for the oil spill
Submitted by oceanoz on Wed, 02/05/2014 - 16:32.
We've been waiting for the Gulf Stream to carry it off our shores here in Louisiana. Thanks for the update that it's already reached Florida.
Joking aside, it's bad stuff. Might want to get out of the water.
Dispersants were sprayed on the surface oil spill to break the oil down into smaller droplets so that they are more readily and quickly able to mix with the water.
Dispersants do not reduce the amount of oil that had been spilled and remaining in the environment, but simply pushes the spilled oil underwater. The action of deploying the chemical dispersant will see to it that the oil spill is not visible, but it also means that we now have both the chemical dispersant and the spilled oil in the Gulf. Both are toxic to things biological. Out of sight, out of mind...
The Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom published a Research Article in November 1970 titled An Oil Dispersant's Effect on the Microflora of Beach Sand. It costs $45, so I suppose no one's going to read it. The report description reads "Oil pollution in marine waters has been a subject of growing concern and has stimulated a variety of pollution studies. Past methods of dealing with the problem have been mechanical, which are effective on land, and chemical which, in the past, have used highly toxic detergents, usually in open waters (Spooner, 1969)."
LifesaCoast.com has an extensive report on the Florida Keys water, which they refer to as "so-called 'sea foam,' which is reality 'sea scum.' Their very descriptive and accurate report notes the "toxic chemical crud" and "Filthy Putrid Ocean Water:"
" pollution is continuously avalanching -- realize that they test the ocean water for bacteria (but not for chemical contaminants, that they dare report anyway) and quietly warn swimmers to get out of the water if there is any chance of an outbreak of sickness that might make the news as bad publicity... Note that nowadays any contact with the ocean water immediately leaves an unpleasantly slick, slimy feel on the skin, and after it dries it feels un-natural sticky and tacky on the skin, which also is not how it used to be. Just wait until the half million gallons of toxic chemical "dispersants" from the gulf oil "spill" comes churning onshore out of the gulf stream current. Realize that according to German researchers and the Los Alamos Laboratories (who have modeled the transport of dye from the Deepwater Horizon spill site) Oil released by the Deepwater Horizon spill could reach the western North Atlantic Ocean by November; given that, the toxic oil/dispersant sludge must at least be floating around on the eastern Florida coastline as of this point in time (September 2010). So, along with a sunburn you can now also get fried from a "waterburn"...Here are some more links on the environment as a result of the Gulf Oil spill and Corexit in the Florida Gulf:
FLORIDA OIL SPILL LAW: ALERT: 13.3 ppm of COREXIT found INLAND, near Florida border - Chemist says tests show "toxic solvent" 2-butoxyethanol that "RUPTURES red blood cells" (VIDEO & PHOTOS)
Corexit found in Orange Beach Waters, WKRG Channel 5, August 19, 2010:
[Cotton Bayou, Ala. resident] Margaret Long... first got suspicious when she saw something in the water she had never seen before. She even took photographs, "Some times it's about the size of a half dollar. Some times it streams along and its like floating sand." She got samples and sent them to chemist Bob Naman in Mobile whose tests results show 13.3 ppm of the chemical dispersant corexit. ... "It concerns me," says Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon.
Scientists oppose the use of dispersant chemicals in the Gulf of Mexico, MSNBC, July 16, 2010:
Corexit 9527A contains 2-BTE (2-butoxyethanol), a toxic solvent that ruptures red blood cells, causing hemolysis (bleeding) and liver and kidney damage (Johanson and Bowman, 1991, Nalco, 2010). Both Corexit dispersants contain petroleum solvents that mix with the crude oil mass and move through it, thus increasing the uptake of oil by organisms (NRC, 2005, Nalco, 2010).
Scientist Finds Deadly Effects of Dispersant Used in Gulf Oil Disaster
"In the cramped lab at Mote Marine Laboratory's Tropical Research Lab on Summerland Key in the Florida Keys, Dr. Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley and her team saw firsthand the effects of Corexit 9500 chemical dispersant on the settlement and survival of coral larvae. It wasn't pretty."
