Republican Senator Rand Paul posted a pro-police article on Facebook and twitter yesterday, noting "The vast majority our police force do care about those living in poverty-- here's a heartwarming example." The story was about a police officer who bought a poor shoplifter woman groceries. Responses to the tweet were for the large part pro-police, but the funniest reply was from user FUTURE Forward who asked "@SenRandPaul how was meeting with Goldman Sachs?"

As one Twitter user pointed out, the url that Rand posted didn't work. But the story he tried to post, and also cross-posted on Facebook, was this one: Tarrant police officer delivers groceries to woman caught stealing eggs at Dollar General

One line from the original article was so ridiculous, with Police Chief Dennis Reno implying that anger or distrust of police is unwarranted and has even disappeared because of people's heartwarming reaction to this story:

"It's growing and growing and growing," Reno said. " A guy called me from New York and just broke down. He said for two months he's been angry with police, and he said this has totally changed his mind."

Other replies to Rand's tweet included the following from various twitter users:

Here is the tweet, and a 'Police State Reality Check' I tweeted to Rand about the 90-year-old guy who has been arrested three times by police for feeding the homeless. I'm sure we can find 100,000 bad cops stories for every ten good ones these days.
