Rick Perry Refuses Texas A&M's Bid To Re-Name Academic Building In His Honor

Texas Governor Rick Perry has rejected a proposal to name the Texas A&M Academoc building after him. During Remarks at the Texas A&M Commencement Convocation last Thursday, Perry said
"Sometime back I was informed of a deeply humbling tribute: a proposal to name the Academic Building in my honor. I have to admit, at first, I was both deeply moved, even excited at the prospect of such an honor. The Academic Building is one of the most iconic buildings on campus. It's where I joined my Corps buddies in shining Sully's brass, where I attended Silver Taps in solemn remembrance of those who had perished, where we took a memorable photo at our five-year reunion and along one of the walkways in its shadow is a special tree, where many an Aggie has made, and accepted, a marriage proposal.

Upon deep reflection, I have informed the Board of Regents of my decision to politely decline this great honor. I do so because certain places on this campus, like our most sacred traditions, transcend any one individual. They are bigger than any one of us and represent our shared heritage, and I want to keep it that way. I want the Academic Building to be called the Academic Building in 2114, 200 years after it was built.

The point of service, whether as a governor or a teacher, is not to make a name but to make a difference. The Aggie brand can be summed up two words: "selfless service," and this notion goes way beyond the Aggie tradition of military service. Aggies feel called to serve, and many respond with service opportunities like the "Big Event" that draws thousands of students to a service project on a specific day each year. We see Aggies leading in board rooms and classrooms, on offshore drilling platforms, in elected office, in non-profit charities that care for the sick and the poor. Aggies are making the world a better place, one deed at a time, exhibiting the power of one individual to change the world around them."

Perry also hinted at presidential aspirations for 2016, stating his objective was to be a "chief executive of a large enterprise with good benefits and a really large personal jet." He also ominously warned of a terror attack on the United States, noting "large doses of vaccines" may ne needed "to respond to a bio-terror attack on our nation." Last week, LibertyFight.com reported Perry's presidential goal after he was spotted dancing in the street with whom he sees as his largest potential money-base: Rick Perry One-Ups Both Rand & Jeb, Does Crazy-Dance With Rabbis In the Street For Hanukkah .
