It's amazing to watch this horrible accident unfold, and to see how fast these vehicles were going with nearly zero visibility. This is a good reminder to always leave plenty of following distance and if visibility is that low, slow down or get off the road. You don't go 65MPH when you can't see 10 feet in front of you! Case in point:
Driver describes being in I-94 pileup
"He was one of the last trucks to hit the accident," Randy Packham said. "It happened right beside my truck." Packham's referring to Jean Larocque, a 57-year-old semi truck driver from Saint-Chrysostome, Quebec, Canada, who died in the Friday morning pileup involving 193 vehicles on I-94 between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. Packham says he heard about the chain-reaction crash on his CB radio and managed to stop before hitting the wreckage. Three other trucks coming from behind, including the one driven by Larocque, didn't even slow down, according to Packham. "They just came up on it and didn't see it; they didn't even have time to hit their brakes," he said. They "went right into the crash, full speed, and then all you could hear was crashing and banging." Larocque's cab smashed into the rear of a rig carrying cars. "His truck went so fast he picked the car trailer up, and it slid right through his cab," Packham said. "He went underneath the trailer."

The Michigan State Police issued a press release at 2 p.m. on 1/9/15, which read "The state of Michigan today activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) due to a severe multi-vehicle crash and hazardous material incident on Interstate 94 between mile markers 88 and 92 in Kalamazoo County. The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is currently working with local emergency management officials to ensure communities have resources during the incident. No requests for state assistance have been received at this time. The SEOC was activated at 12:30 p.m. SEOC personnel are monitoring the situation in collaboration with state agencies and local officials. The SEOC is the emergency operations center for the state of Michigan. Located in Lansing, the SEOC is overseen by the MSP/EMHSD and coordinates response and recovery efforts by state agencies and local government. The SEOC is staffed by members of state agencies for decision making and information coordination during disasters or emergencies in the state of Michigan."

The driver of the truck that had the fireworks did not appear to be injured, he was interviewed by the news in a video here. Police told that 76 semi trucks were involved in the massive wreck. reported "Jean Larocque, 57, of St.-Chrysostome, Quebec, was killed as the semi truck he was driving became involved in a pile-up of more than 120 vehicles..."

Snowy roads spark deadly pileups across Michigan

"The first significant snowfall of the new year in Michigan triggered massive highway pileups that killed at least three people, injured about two dozen and closed multiple freeways. An estimated 193 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash in which one person died and 22 were hurt on Interstate 94 between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek late Friday morning. One of the vehicles was a truck whose load of fireworks ignited, shutting down the freeway in both directions for hours.
"Right in front of me the trucks started to go crazy. You couldn't see a single thing at the time of all the accidents. I was able to pull off and just watch semi after semi and semi and semi hit each other and cars hit each other. I mean people were going full speed ahead," Micah Stanislowski, who was involved in the crash, told WWMT (channel 3) in Battle Creek."

From Detroit Free Press:
"Area hospitals reported treating 16 patients; one remained in serious condition about 1 p.m... Only a few vehicles were involved in what Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard C. Fuller said was the first crash at the scene about halfway between Battle Creek and Galesburg. That occurred in the eastbound lanes. Quickly, vehicles began to pile up in the westbound lanes of the freeway, slamming one after another into vehicles ahead and the median barrier. Crashed vehicles stretched for hundreds of yards in the westbound lanes. Battle Creek police and fire crews joined the response to the crash, city officials said. And two Battle Creek Transit buses were dispatched to the scene to carry uninjured crash victims from the scene, where it was 12 degrees late this morning, to a Galesburg-Augusta school serving as a warming shelter. The crash was reported about 10 a.m. By 1 p.m., it appeared that most of the victims had been transported from the scene. ...Michigan State Police say a trucker from Ottawa, Canada, has died and multiple others are injured. People who are not injured were taken to warming centers, according to State Police Inspector Tracey McAndrew."
