58 year old police officer Jean Gomes of the New Bedford, Massachusetts Police Department has been on the force 26 years. He has been charged in Superior Court with three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. District Attorney spokesman Greg Miliote said that the charge of indecent assault and battery on a person under 14 by a mandated reporter carries a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence and a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Despite numerous accusations of heinous crimes against a child, The Bristol County, Massachusetts District Attorney and Judge Renee P. Dupuis imposed an extremely low bail of only $2,500 cash for Officer Jean Gomes.

According to Wikipedia The New Bedford PD has 300 employees and a $15 million dollar annual budget.

On their website, the department links to their official Facebook Page amd updates it regularly, posting many stories about local crimes along with multiple photos of all the suspects and arrestees. The New bedford Police Dept. even lists the suspects age, date of birth, their home address and apartment numbers! However, for some reason they conveniently omitted any mention of Officer Jean Gomes. They didn't mention his arrest, they didn't post details of the crimes he's accused of, they didn't post his photos, they didn't give his birth date, and they didn't list is home address, like they do to everyone else!

Shouldn't a 30 year veteran of the department accused of such monstrosities and a severe breach of trust be 'outed' and profiled like all the other arrestees in their city so that any other victims might come forward?

For example, they list the defendants Kevin Graham, accused of cocaine delivery; Kevin Murray for armed robbery; Jose Alberto Sanchez for armed robbery; Kevin Graham who faces crack cocaine and firearms charges; Mark Richard and his girlfriend Chyna Johnson, who will face gun and drug charges; and Dontel Morgan, who had warrants for two counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, two counts of sexual battery, three counts of kidnapping, and three counts of possession of a deadly weapon with the intent to commit a crime. And that is only the recent arrestees. I'm sure they have many, many more. The New Bedford Police obviously spend a lot of time updating their Facebook page and outlining meticulous details about the alleged crimes, as well as the personal info of suspects.

So, why doesn't the same apply to one of their own? Why doesn't the Bedford Police Dept. post Gomes' mug shot, and data?

After all, their has to be good reasons for posting alll this stuff right?

Gomes was pictured in a news story, a file photo with his police dog here.

On the 'Our Mission' section of their website, Police Chief David A. Provencher insists that he wants to "Maintain high standards of integrity," "respect the rights and liberties of all," be '"impartial" and "consistent."

I think tha chief's not being 'equal, and consistent' unless he adds the latest criminal arrestee to their facebook page. What argument could possibly be made against it?

Police Chief David A. Provencher writes:

"The mission of the New Bedford Police Department is to work in partnership with the community to enhance our quality of life through crime prevention; guaranteeing the constitutional rights of all, preserving the peace, reducing fear, and providing a safe environment. This mission cannot be accomplished without taking into account those values that guide our actions. I believe that as partners with the community in providing for public safety, we must: Value human life, respecting the rights and liberties of all. Protect the lives and property of community members and visitors and impartially enforce the law. Vigorously provide services to neighborhoods that enhance the quality of life within our community... Maintain high standards of integrity consistent with service as law enforcement professionals. My philosophy of how the New Bedford Police Department should address its responsibility to this community can be summed up in one phrase. I believe that this organization exists for the purpose of 'public safety achieved with public service.' These terms go hand in hand, and must stand as the guiding principles behind all of our efforts."
