This week marks the 7th anniversary of the tragedy of the suicide of Pete Nosan. He was the Southern California chapter leader of the late Aaron Russo's "Restore the Republic." He had refused to file his income tax returns and the IRS soon came after him, showed up to his job and seized his bank account. Soon afterwards, Pete used a gun and took his own life.
I post this reminder not to romanticize or make the tragedy of suicide heroic or noble in any way. It is an unspeakable tragedy and terrible waste. Pete and I were not close friends and we didn't know each other that well, but he called me up and we had a long conversation about a month before he did this. We had actually met at an anti-war rally in L.A. and I had had my 9/11 truth stuff., and we immediately hit it off. Two Ron Paul supporters surrounded by a gaggle of hard-core leftists made for an amusing time that day.- but we agreed with them on the war, so it was fun.
After we had met, I would then run into Pete at events, protests, conferences, and rallys, etc. He was a very dedicated and truth-seeking man. He wanted justice and liberty. In our last conversation he told me he was concerned about the IRS and the repercussions of what he had done. But he was convinced he was right and wanted to take a principled stand.
When I saw notice of his death on the internet one day, I didn't believe it. First of all, the initial reports had gotten his name wrong and referred to him as "Pete Nolan."
So I simply called his cell phone number, and his mom answered. I didn't know quite what to say so I just told her who I was and asked outright if it was true what people were saying about Pete.
His mom of course was understandably very distraught and upset, not only about what had occurred but seemingly at the movement that Pete was so involved with, and where it had led her son.
My wife and I had a planned trip to Paris, France that week so unfortunately I was not able to attend Pete's funeral or meet and talk with his mom.
Here is the article I wrote on it in 2008. Below that are discussion threads from the DailyPaul.com and RonPaulForums.com. Campaign For Liberty also reported on Pete's death at the time. It's linked in the DailyPaul thread, but for some reason the original post at C4L has since been removed.
Rest In Peace, Pete Nosan October 13, 2008 at 17:38:24
Pete Nosan was a tireless crusader for tax honesty and constitutional government. Tragically, he took his own life October 10th. May he rest in peace.
March 17, 1966- October 10, 2008
Sad to report that Pete Nosan, who headed the California chapter of Aaron Russo's RESTORE THE REPUBLIC, took his own life on October 10th. Pete had been active in the freedom movement and was a staunch advocate for tax honesty, constitutional government and 9/11 truth. He had not filed for several years and the IRS was now coming after him.
I got the news about Pete Sunday night and called Pete's cell phone number to verify if it were true. His mom answered and needless to say it was a very emotional conversation. The IRS was after him, they demanded $15,000 and had come to his work last week and garnished his wages.
Pete had attended our June meeting in Riverside where we showed Loose Change 2nd edition. Since he was from Riverside, he had helped to get the word out and had pretty much filled the room.
Some of the photos in the vid are from that day.
Sad news all around. May he rest in Peace,
