Justice Scalia: "A constitutional convention is a horrible idea. This is not a good century to write a constitution."

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia recently commented on the idea of a Constitutional Convention. Speaking at the Federalist Society in Morristown, New Jersey on May 8, 2015, Scalia stated, in part,
"Every tin horn dictator in the world today, every president for life, has a Bill of Rights...That's not what makes us free; if it did, you would rather live in Zimbabwe. But you wouldn't want to live in most countries in the world that have a Bill of Rights. What has made us free is our Constitution. Think of the word 'constitution;' it means structure. The genius of the American constitutional system is the dispersal of power. Once power is centralized in one person, or one part [of government], a Bill of Rights is just words on paper. What a difference that makes. When you have a bill that says states will not receive federal highway funds unless they raise the drinking age to 21, that bill would not pass. The states that had lower drinking ages would tell their senators, 'You vote for that and you are out of there.' That has all changed. You now have senators who have no connection to the state government, never been in state government and some of them have never been to the state. A constitution is about setting structure; it is not about writing the preferences of special interest groups.

"...The genius of the American Constitution is the dispersal of power, in which nobody has all the power... It is designed so that all the legislation that has substantial support will get through... It doesn't take much to throw a monkey wrench into this complicated system."

At a Q & A after his speech, someone asked about a constitutional convention, to which Scalia replied "A constitutional convention is a horrible idea. This is not a good century to write a constitution."

Asked about his legal philosophy, Scalia said "I really regard my legal philosophy as common sense: You read the text and give it the meaning it had when it was adopted. I need somebody to follow for that?"

Admission to the event was $75 for non members. The following Tuesday, on 5/12/15, Scalia spoke at a Federalist Society gathering at The Ritz-Carlton Phoenix, Arizona. Apparently it's not as hard to see one of these 'elites' in person as might be expected. He even hawks his autographed books at a card table afterwards!

The NJ group has a podcast/video archive page but Scalia's talk does not seem to be posted.
