It's 'for the children!' Unlicensed Austin AISD School Bus Driver Flips Over In Rain

An Austin Independent School District schoobus flipped over into a ditch off I-35 North of Austin, TX on January 22, 2015 at 8:10AM. The driver had a suspended license, but the school district was clueless about the matter until it was too late. The school district also conveniently neglected to publish anything about it on their extravagent website, which has many updates daily. Fortunately there were no children in the bus at the time, but the driver had been driving kids around with a suspended license for two weeks.

Like many local governments, safety is put on the back burner as AISD cuts corners and doesn't have a competent system in place to monitor their school bus drivers. Instead, they rely on employee 'self-reporting,' which results in incidents such as this.

Kris Hafezi, Director of Transportation for AISD, told KXAN that they may 'consider' checking license status more often.

So with 500 bus drivers transporting 22,000 students to and from school each day, should the district be checking more often?

"That's something to be considered," Hafezi responded.

...No students were on board at the time of the crash, and the driver has since resigned from his job.

This just shows the gross incompetence of government. Why should they merely 'consider' a system of checking drivers more often, it instead of implementing it? Most all large trucking companies for example have a real-time reporting system where management is notified of even a citation, much less an accident or suspended license. Also, why was the school bus driver allowed to resign instead of being fired? Is driving a schoolbus unlicensed for AISD not a terminable offense?

Kids could easily have been killed in the accident. Here is an exclusive video of the wreck, taken at 8:19AM on 1/22/15. The accident occurred just north of exit 253A on I-35 South.:
