Rock icon David Bowie mentioned Adolph Hitler several other times during the mid 1970's, including an interview in Playboy where he proclaimed "Adolf Hitler was one of the first rock stars."
In 1974, Bowie said “Britain is ready for a fascist leader… I think Britain could benefit from a fascist leader. After all, fascism is really nationalism… I believe very strongly in fascism, people have always responded with greater efficiency under a regimental leadership…”
In 1976, The New Musical Express ran an article titled HEIL AND FAREWELL, with a photo of Bowie giving a Nazi salute while standing in the back of a convertible at London's Victoria Station.
In a 1975 interview, Bowie spoke of a new right wing for America:
"You've got to have an extreme right front come up and sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up. Then you can get a new form of liberalism. There's some form of ghost force liberalism permeating the air in America, but it's got to go, because it's got no foundation at all, apart from a set of laws that were established way back in the bloody '50s and early '60s and have no bearing at all in the '70s. So the best thing that can happen is for an extreme right Government to come. It'll do something positive at least to the cause commotion in people and they'll either accept the dictatorship or get rid of it."
In association with Rock's Backpages we republish the controversial 1975 interview in which David Bowie appeared to call for the rise of a new right wing
David Bowie: Watch Out Mate! Hitler's On His Way Back
"Oh, alright ... let's talk about the rest of the album. Very decadent this is [laughs]. 'Somebody Up There Likes Me' is a 'Watch out mate, Hitler's on his way back'... it's your rock and roll sociological bit. "But it's just become one more whirling deity, right? Going round that never-decreasing circle. And rock and roll is dead."
Does he really believe that?
"Absolutely. It's a toothless old woman. It's really embarrassing."
"Dictatorship," says Bowie. "There will be a political figure in the not too distant future who'll sweep this part of the world like early rock and roll did. "You probably hope I'm not right. But I am. My predictions are very accurate ... always."... "You've got to have an extreme right front come up and sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up. Then you can get a new form of liberalism. "There's some form of ghost force liberalism permeating the air in America, but it's got to go, because it's got no foundation at all, apart from a set of laws that were established way back in the bloody '50s and early '60s and have no bearing at all in the '70s. (The Supreme Court in America was at its most liberal in the late '50s, early '60s.) "So the best thing that can happen is for an extreme right Government to come. It'll do something positive at least to the cause commotion in people and they'll either accept the dictatorship or get rid of it. "It's like a kaleidoscope," says Bowie. "No matter how many little colours you put in it, that kaleidoscope will make those colours have a pattern ... and that's what happens with TV – it doesn't matter who puts what in the TV, by the end of the year there's a whole format that the TV put together. The TV puts over its own plan.
Flashback.com reports" 1976: David Bowie's 'Nazi Salute'
Bowie had some form. In 1974, he had been quoted:
“Britain is ready for a fascist leader… I think Britain could benefit from a fascist leader. After all, fascism is really nationalism… I believe very strongly in fascism, people have always responded with greater efficiency under a regimental leadership…”
In September 1976, the daring entertainer appeared in Playboy:
BOWIE: Rock stars are fascists. Adolf Hitler was one of the first rock stars.
PLAYBOY: How so?
BOWIE: Think about it. Look at some of his films and see how he moved. I think he was quite as good as Jagger. It's astounding. And boy, when he hit that stage, he worked an audience. Good God! He was no politician. He was a media artist. He used politics and theatrics and created this thing that governed and controlled the show for 12 years. The world will never see his like again. He staged a country - People aren't very bright, you know? They say they want freedom, but when they get the chance, they pass up Nietzsche and choose Hitler because he would march into a room to speak and music and lights would come on at strategic moments. It was rather like a rock 'n roll concert. The kids would get very excited - girls got hot and sweaty and guys wished it was them up there. That, for me, is the rock ‘n roll experience.
In 1976, David Bowie was at London's Victoria station. A rockstar catching a train might be an extraordinary event, but something else caught the eye of the NME. Bowie was now working as the Thin White Duke. In character, he made a gesture.
In a 2011 profile, the Daily Mail reported on Bowie's fascination with Hitler' They also noted something that is not well known, that Bowie has an affair with a MAN who had a sex change operation! Yikes. Who knew?
"But it was also an apt description for the decadent, emotionless character the rock star was becoming, smartly dressed in aristocratic Thirties style with slicked-back hair and by now obsessed with Nazi paraphernalia.
Bowie, now obsessed with the Berlin cabaret scene, had yet another lover, a 6ft nightclub artiste who had been born a man but had had a sex-change.
His fascination with Hitler's Third Reich started after a concert in LA, when one of the town's most famous British expats, the writer Christopher Isherwood, went backstage with the gay artist David Hockney. Isherwood had spent time in Berlin in the Thirties, writing the novella Goodbye To Berlin, which inspired the hit musical Cabaret. The chameleon in Bowie was enthralled by this piece of history.
By the time his tour reached Stockholm, he was musing publicly that Britain could benefit from a fascist leader, and when he reached London he was pictured, to his shame, at Victoria station giving what looked very much like a Nazi salute. Soon, he had rented a flat in Berlin for himself, Iggy Pop and his on-off lover Coco Schwab, near Isherwood's old home in the city.
...Outwardly, Bowie was at the top of his game, romanced by the ageing Elizabeth Taylor, sleeping with Amanda Lear - Salvador Dali's sex-change muse - and packing the audiences into his Hollywood concerts. But behind the scenes all was not well.
... Angie Bowie, to whom he was still married, was left behind in the Swiss chateau (once the home of star-crossed lovers Frederic Chopin and George Sand) which she had bought in the vain hope of reviving their unorthodox relationship But as his biographer reveals, Bowie, now obsessed with the Berlin cabaret scene, had yet another lover, a 6ft nightclub artiste who had been born a man but had had a sex-change.
