Rand Finally Asked About GOP Obamacare 'Replacement' & Mandate: Will Insurance Still Be Compulsory Or Not?

I've been following Rand Paul's statements on "repealing and replacing Obamacare" for some time. Several of those earlier videos are below.

But one fundamental point that none of the politicians or pundits had directly answered: I would like to know whether or not Trump and these republicans who keep saying "replace" obamacare are going to keep health insurance compulsory in America? No one is being direct and honest about this.

As most conservatives, I do not believe that the government should compel anyone to buy any product, including health insurance or even auto insurance. That is the fundamental issue.

The problem is that Democrats and Republican statists nationwide, on both a federal and state level, have supported compulsory auto insurance for years, and Obama actually used that fact as a justification for Obamacare when he first started pushing it.

Senator Rand Paul was finally asked about the mandate today by a local talk show host. But Paul, who I believed is well-intentioned on this matter and supports the free market, his answer left a lot to be desired, and was far from clear. Here is the transcript and the audio:

Q. What does your plan do to the mandate that I have to buy insurance in the first place?

Paul: It gets rid of the mandate, so you would no longer to be forced to... (awkward pause) ..some of the penalties are going to be gotten rid of through the reconciliation. So there are two steps to this. One of these will be a simple majority vote and thats to repleal obamacare.

And that's why people, I don't want people to mistake that I'm not going to vote for that. I will vote for the direct vote on repealing obamacare. That will come in the next two or three weeks. The same day we vote on repeal, this is what I discussed with President-elect Trump is that I think we should vote on replacement the same day, and he called me to say he agreed with me on that. So I say we vote on repeal we vote on replacement. The replacement bills, which are all good ideas I think, unfortunately is gonna take 60 votes in the Senate. So there's a possibility the Democrats, they won't even show up for the innaugeration, you think they're gonna vote for a replacement bill?

There's a good chance they don't want to help us. Because they liked obamacare - in fact they would go with a one step further, and have a completely socialized or single-payer health insurance or health market. So I don't know if theyre gonna help us. If they don't help us though, at least the American people will know that we are trying to replace it but the Democrats are stopping us."

But it's a mistake for Republicans to not put forward a replacement. The Democrats are gonna cry cry cry, they're gonna whine whine whine and we need to have a bill out there that replaces it because there are gonna be people who are gonna be caught up in the mix. And we want to make sure that the most amount of people can get insurance at the least amount of cost. And that's what our bill tries to do. But if the Democrats are gonna try to obstruct that, we need to have that debate. It needs to be out in the public. And if there is trouble in this transition, which I think there is going to be trouble, really it's at the feet of those who refuse to allow us to replace obamacare.

...It's kinda complicated

.. and it's a little hard to know exactly which is in which bill until we see the repeal bill. The repeal bill.. in that bill, I think it's going to be done gradyually,.. it's gonna gradually go away over a couple year period.
