It's a sad state of affairs when the Arizona Department of Transportation has to take to Facebook assuring the confused public that they can continue to use their state driver license as ID to fly until 2020, despite misleading signs that TSA has posted in airports.

"Current Arizona driver licenses, IDs are valid for air travel until Oct. 1, 2020. New TSA notices at airports don't affect Arizonans. PERIOD," an annoyed-sounding AZ government press release stated yesterday. After October 2020, Arizona residents can opt to apply for a 'Voluntary travel ID' to comply with DHS requirements to board an airplane.

People should also remember that they can board any flight using their U.S. Passport without involving their state driver license at all. [I fly pretty often and haven't had any problem for many years- believe it or not the customs and TSA folks have been very professional, which I was very glad to see, because it can be very aggriavting otherwise. I do not support the existence of the TSA agency.]

AZ DOT posted the following on their Facebook page:

The agency posted an even more curt message on their website, explaining:

Current Arizona driver licenses, IDs are valid for air travel until Oct. 1, 2020

PHOENIX - Current Arizona driver licenses and state identification cards are valid for air travel until Oct. 1, 2020.

Period.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is sharing that message with travelers who may be confused by new Transportation Security Administration placards posted at airports. These notices say that beginning on Jan. 28, 2018, travelers using a driver license or state ID for travel will need one from a state compliant with the federal REAL ID Act or a state with an extension for compliance.

Arizona is among states granted federal extensions allowing valid driver licenses and state IDs to be used for travel until Oct. 1, 2020. That's because Arizona has started offering a voluntary ID that meets REAL ID Act requirements.

Arizonans have the option now to obtain a Voluntary Travel ID. It's available by appointment at Motor Vehicle Division offices or without an appointment at an Authorized Third Party provider offering driver license services. It costs $25 and in most cases is valid for eight years.

Please visit azdot.gov/TravelID for more information on the Voluntary Travel ID and the documents required to get one, to schedule an appointment to get a Voluntary Travel ID at an MVD office or to locate an Authorized Third Party offering driver license services. You also can schedule an MVD appointment to get a Voluntary Travel ID via ServiceArizona.com.

After 2020, Arizona residents can opt to apply for a 'Voluntary travel ID' to comply with Dept. of Homeland Security requirements to board an airplane or to get into a federal building. But the Arizona government assures residents "THERE'S NO RUSH!"

There's No Rush! Current Arizona credentials will be sufficient until Oct. 1, 2020 to pass through airport security to board commercial aircraft as well as access restricted areas in federal facilities, nuclear power plants and military facilities.

The website realnightmare.org outlined a lot of the problems with Real ID, noting that the law passed under George W. Bush after the 9/11 'terror attacks' was 'invasive, expensive, and pointless,' noting that it 'will do little if anything to protect against terrorism.'
