For those of you not aware of the tragic story of 23-month old UK toddler Alfie Evans, here is a quick thumbnail-sketch run-down.

This little baby supposedly has brain damage, although no medical experts even know what his diagnosis is. The UK government court ruled that the hospital can take him off life support against his parent's wishes.

The 21-year old father flew to Italy & met with Pope Francis who offered to fly Alfie to a Vatican hospital for care.

The UK court said no, & pulled him off life support on April 23.

Protesters tried to storm the hospital, hundreds of police barred them from entering.

Italy issued Alfie Italian citizenship & diplomats of Italy contacted England to rescue Alfie. Again the evil UK court said No, we are going to kill him, it's in his best interest.

The hospital refused to give Alfie even oxygen or water. the evil UK doctors claimed that he would not live three minutes after being taken off life support. (Similar to the "comfort care" doctors we know about here, where they purposely overdose patients with enough pain medicine to kill tbem, while at the same time starving and dehydrating them to death.) .

The UK government said that if Alfie's father tried to take him out if the hospital, he would be "arrested for assault."

Pope Francis tweeted to keep praying for Alfie.

Alfie has now survived 3 days(!) without the machine, oxygen or water. They finally allowed him oxygen and water. There was another court hearing and a helicopter arrived to take him to Italy, they were refused.

The court ruled against Alfie's parents and declared that they cannot move him.

Here's a good Fox news editorial on the matter. See also updates on the case here.

A 3 judge "appeals court" in the UK ruled that Alfie can not get help at the hospital in Italy. He will DIE.

Former U.S. Congressman Joe Walsh sums this whole thing up perfectly in this tweet. Bravo to him for saying this!

"Why does an American need an AR-15?"

To make sure what's happening to #AlfieEvans never happens here. That's why.

You should read this part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on *legitimate defense:*

Legitimate defense

2263 The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not."65

2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:

If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful... Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's.66

2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm. For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to use arms to repel aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their responsibility.

2266 The efforts of the state to curb the spread of behavior harmful to people's rights and to the basic rules of civil society correspond to the requirement of safeguarding the common good. Legitimate public authority has the right and duty to inflict punishment proportionate to the gravity of the offense. Punishment has the primary aim of redressing the disorder introduced by the offense. When it is willingly accepted by the guilty party, it assumes the value of expiation. Punishment then, in addition to defending public order and protecting people's safety, has a medicinal purpose: as far as possible, it must contribute to the correction of the guilty party.67

2267 Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.

If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.

Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."68

While we're at it, let's review what the CCC says on the issue of "armed resistance to oppression by political authority." Here are paragraphs 2242 & 2243:

2242 The citizen is obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order, to the fundamental rights of persons or the teachings of the Gospel. Refusing obedience to civil authorities, when their demands are contrary to those of an upright conscience, finds its justification in the distinction between serving God and serving the political community. "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."48 "We must obey God rather than men":49

When citizens are under the oppression of a public authority which oversteps its competence, they should still not refuse to give or to do what is objectively demanded of them by the common good; but it is legitimate for them to defend their own rights and those of their fellow citizens against the abuse of this authority within the limits of the natural law and the Law of the Gospel.50

2243 Armed resistance to oppression by political authority is not legitimate, unless all the following conditions are met: 1) there is certain, grave, and prolonged violation of fundamental rights; 2) all other means of redress have been exhausted; 3) such resistance will not provoke worse disorders; 4) there is well-founded hope of success; and 5) it is impossible reasonably to foresee any better solution."
